John Ivison “Boog” Powell, 78, of Chester passed away Friday, November 1, 2024 at CHI St. Luke’s Hospital in Lufkin.
Visitation was held Thursday, November 7, 2024 from 5:30 - 7 p.m. at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home Chapel in Woodville.
Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Friday, November 8, 2024 at Nowlin Cemetery in Chester. Officiating was Brother Russell Duplantis. Serving as pallbearers were Robert Yeo, Trent Yeo, Will Powell, and Roho Pouland.
John was born June 28, 1946 to Samuel Wilson, Sr. and Edvis Toler Powell in Camden, Texas and was a graduate of Chester High School. He served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam, being discharged as a Sgt. John was a former resident of Sheldon and had lived in Chester for the past 23 years. He retired from the Houston Texas Longshoreman’s Local as a longshoreman/gearman. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a member of Caney Creek Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Edvis Powell.
He is survived by his sons, John Kevin Powell of Chester, Brian Powell of Channelview, and Michael Powell of Chester; sister, Mable Bowman of Channelview; 4 grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild.
