Years ago, while ministering in South Texas we learned about subterranean termites. We had a door frame being replaced in our building and the carpenter discovered an infestation of termites. We called the exterminator and the building was treated. However, the people cleaning the building noticed more termites coming up through holes where mortar once was. The next Sunday while I was preaching, the termites started swarming and one finally got into my right ear. It was then that we had a short prayer and we all went home! We were told that we had subterranean termites in our building, and the bug man had to come back.
After reading an article about termites eating bookshelves and a Bible, I started wondering if a comment was in order about termites in our lives. I think you know I am referring to spiritual termites.
To be sure, the termites shut our church service down. But it was temporary.
Back in the book of Judges, we can read about how the children of Israel were calling right wrong, and wrong right. Sounds like today!
When I hear Christian people say that morals don’t matter…when I hear excuses for people because, “that is just the way they are,” then I think spiritual termites have entered into that person’s life.
People who are mad and upset most of the time have a termite problem.
I know from personal experience that I once let those pesky termites affect me in my spiritual walk. I also know if I hadn’t exterminated the termites, untold damage was going to destroy me.
Please notice the words of Jesus in Matthew 15:11. It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.”
