Four Big Sandy ISD students advanced to state in Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) following District 4 competition on Jan. 14. This makes the eighth consecutive year that Big Sandy DECA students have advanced to state. Eight students competed in six different events during the Jan. 14 competition in Conroe.
Each competitor took a 100-question test in their content area and then were given a role play situation to solve a problem and/or create a new marketing strategy and present their method(s) to a judge.
Zane Alec, Ainsley Barker and Shyler Thompson all advanced to state in the Personal Financial Literacy Event. Also advancing was Lexi-Jo Richardson in the Restaurant and Food Service Management Series.
Other competitors were Paige Cain, Business Services Marketing Series, and Paige Cox, Apparel and Accessories Marketing Series. Also competing were Hunter Jackson, Principles of Hospitality and Tourism, and Braelynn Noori, Principles of Marketing. Attending as a voting delegate was Sydney Jones.
“I am extremely proud of these students,” Club Sponsor Stefanie Carpenter said. “These students have been working very hard since the beginning of the school year. Their hard work definitely paid off this week.”
There were over 1,100 students in attendance. Most of the schools were 5A and 6A schools, Carpenter said. Big Sandy was the smallest school attending. The state competition will be held in Dallas on March 6-8.
