COLDSPRING — After being closed for five months because of damage sustained in the July 2024 hurricane, the San Jacinto County Jail is now able to house prisoners again.

According to former Sheriff Greg Capers of the San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office, the Texas Commission on Jail Standards has reinspected the areas of the San Jacinto County Jail that were damaged during Hurricane Beryl and it has successfully passed inspection.

Sheriff deputies and jailers began retrieving all San Jacinto County inmates from five separate county jails, one being in Beauregard Parish, Louisiana.

This effort was completed Dec. 28, and Capers said he fulfilled his goal of reopening the jail before the end of his administration in anticipation of the new administration.

Capers said the jail is the most important operation inside the Sheriff’s Office and this effort will provide a seamless transition.
