Shepherd Chamber of Commerce is planning July 4 on Saturday, July 4. This is the first time in years we have done this, but we have been fortunate enough to have Mr. Guzman, who is our fireworks supplier, offer us a bargain on fireworks for the actual Fourth.
Usually, it costs a great deal more to have this on the actual Fourth. So, vendors, food and goods, watch for the vendor form on the web site. Music, games, face painting, meet and greet with elected officials and community leaders and then fireworks at 9 p.m. This is a special day as you know — the 250th Birthday of the USA.
•Shepherd Chamber is hoping to get a Community Market going in the park next to the library. To encourage vendors to try out this new venture there will be no charge for the next two months. The market will be on the fourth Saturday of the month from 8 a.m. till 1 p.m. Call or text the Chamber number below to register.
•The Corral Restaurant opened on a very busy day last week. There was a great crowd trying out the new place and so many people ordered the Chicken Fried Steak they sold out. Niki, the General Manager, did a fine shop organizing this eating place which has undergone a complete refurbishment.
•The Republican Party of San Jacinto County held a Meet the Candidates event on Tuesday. State Rep. Janis Holt conducted the meeting, giving both candidates 2 minutes each on the different questions which people had asked. She welcomed the audience and kept the meeting running smoothly.
Candidates DeeDee Bailey and Cyndy McClure answered every question and did well. The meeting was well-attended with about 45-50 people showing up. Charissa Arizpe made sure everything was in order and ended the meeting thanking everyone for coming.
•SJC Senior Center had Fish Friday last week sponsored by the Zorn Family. The family were not in attendance but wanted to do this in memory of a beloved family member.
•Recently I was sent photos and information about the return of stained-glass windows to Coldspring Methodist Church. This historic church was founded in 1848.
At the Easter service just a few weeks ago the congregation was surprised by the two beautiful stained-glass windows installed over the fixed windows. Designed and created by artist David Bailey of Hampton's Works Glass, they represent many months of effort to recover old and historic materials and to put them to a renewed use.
Mr. Robert Trapp generously donated some stained glass which had been saved by his mother Billie Trapp from the Courthouse, when it was remodeled in 1936. Ms Billie was a source or great knowledge of our history and she is sorely missed.
There is a lot more about this work which I will ask to be placed on the Historical Commission website. This is being remodeled too. Thank you, Mr. Juan F. Bendfeldt, for sending me the information and photos.
