February is my favorite month of the year. Why, because everything I do and celebrate that month has to do with purple. My birthstone is purple amethyst, my favorite flower, the orchid, is purple, and I love purple grapes more than the green ones.
However, my favorite holidays are Halloween and Thanksgiving Day. I think that has to do with food. I love to cook, and unfortunately my mother was from the South, so everything I love to eat is southern and fried.
These past few weeks we have had many really cold days, but tolerable because the sunshine is out and we have had very little rainfall. The windchill factor is what we elderly people cannot stand the most.
Sunday was a beautiful day, and I was excited to spend Sunday afternoon with one of the best cooks in Trinity County, Lanora Ainsworth, to celebrate her birthday and mine. We had a seafood buffet prepared by my friend that was magnificent and all we wanted to do was talk and sleep after dinner because we were exhausted from eating and talking too much.
Talk about a glutton for punishment, I am going to enjoy a Mexican feast at El Rancho Viejo today to celebrate another birthday party for Lanora Ainsworth. Anyone that lives to be 94 years old deserves to have as many birthday celebrations as possible.
In a small town, you get to know everyone’s birth date, and you celebrate together if possible. In the first two weeks of February, I celebrate with Lanora Ainsworth, Dr. Bubba Hirsch, Mike Morrison, and Larry Grant. We are a fun group and very opinionated but loveable.
•Speaking of Larry Grant, President of the Trinity County Crime Stoppers Association, his organization had the biggest and best Mardi Gras Cowboy Gala this past weekend and grossed more than $20,000 from the fundraiser.
It was a sold-out event and the donations were fabulous. The food was great and the music for dancing was perfect. Tickets were sold out two weeks in advance, so next year if you want to be part of the “in” crowd you will listen to me and get your tickets early. Tickets and tables were not available after the first week in January. Kudos to Larry and his board.
•Next week we have two events that will be worth attending, and fortunately for you both events on the same date are at different places and at different times.
First is the Martin Senior Citizen Center’s Valentine’s Day Luncheon on Friday, Feb. 13, from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. located at 400 Walker St. Cost is $20 per person. If you are 80 years old or older, the cost is $15 per person.
Lunch menu includes filet mignon, scalloped potatoes, bacon-wrapped asparagus, rolls, drinks, cake, hors d’oeuvres, chocolate covered strawberries, complementary sangria, door prizes, live music, bingo ($100 in cash prizes) and trivia.
For reservations, call (936) 594-2625.
The second event is Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. at First Methodist Church of Trinity, 131 N. Elm St. It is the Piapagorsky Classical Music Concert featuring the piano and cello. The concert is free, but donations are appreciated. For more information, contact Laura at (936) 594-3856.
•The following dates are reminders of scheduled events around Trinty that have been posted for weeks in advance to inform the public. They are one national holiday, one religious holiday, and one regular monthly Dinner with Friends at the Methodist Church of Trinity.
Valentine’s Day is Feb. 14
Lovelady’s Love Fest is Feb. 14.
Presidents Holiday is Feb. 16
Pancake Supper, Feb. 17.
Ash Wednesday is Feb. 18.
•The Month of February is Black History Month. A bill was passed in 1986 by President Ford to honor African American Citizen’s achievements that contributed so much to make life better for all Americans.
There is an amazing story behind the founders of the Black History Month legacy. One worth looking up and reading. I watch history channels, Public Broadcasting Shows, news, animal shows, and anything about the founding of America.
I try to not disrespect the leader of our government because my mother told me to have respect for the office not the man, but ye gads, trying to re-write history and destroy our history for your ego, I am appalled.
Lately I have been a little outspoken among my friends about the USA’s future outlook and I think the final straw to my belligerency came when the DOJ started arresting the press people for doing their jobs.
When you control the press from telling the people what is happening in their local, state, and national government we are in for a whole lot of trouble.
I do not have much news this week, but with this beautiful weather continuing, it will be March before you know it, and events will really start popping then.
I just hope we get to vote next month early as usual, and there will be a change of attitude by the people elected to power in 2026.
See you at the Valentine Luncheon next week.
