COLDSPRING — An inmate of the San Jacinto County Jail will face additional charges after allegedly attacking detention officers.

According to Sheriff’s Office reports, on Oct. 11 at approximately 8:12 a.m., two San Jacinto County Jail detention officers were conducting a search for contraband inside an inmate’s cell when the inmate, identified as Joshua Mullenix, 18, of Shepherd, reportedly became combative and physically assaulted both officers.

During the altercation, Mullenix was said to have struck one officer multiple times in the head and neck, causing bruising, swelling, and a mild concussion. A second officer attempted to assist in gaining control of the inmate and was thrown to the concrete floor, sustaining a sprained knee and a hip injury.

Both correctional officers sought medical treatment at a local hospital. One officer was subsequently unable to return to duty for the remainder of the workweek due to her injuries.

Mullenix, who was already incarcerated at the San Jacinto County Jail on an unrelated charge, was placed in a segregation cell following the incident without further complications.

As a result of the investigation, Mullenix was charged with two counts of assault on a public servant, both third-degree felonies.
