Sitting Watch

Good morning, Trinity, pour a cup of coffee and let’s talk.

This is Steven Jeter; I am the police chief for the Trinity Police Department. It is an honor and a privilege to be able to take a few minutes of your time and talk. This will be a weekly column allowing you and I to discuss topics that affect you and I on a regular basis.

For those who do not know me, I have been the Police Chief in Trinity for just over a year. I have been a police officer for almost 30 years, with most of my service time coming from the Department of Public Safety (DPS) as a State Trooper and a Texas Ranger.

I was a member of the Texas Rangers, Company A, for 11 years. Trinity County was one of the counties I routinely covered. I have always held a fondness for Trinity County, hence my return. My time with DPS and the Texas Rangers has taken me all over the State of Texas as well as across our great nation chasing bad guys while serving and protecting the residents of Texas.

Like many of you, I am a transplanted Texican. My family and I migrated to Texas in the ‘70s from the Midwest looking for work. I am blessed to have parents from whom I still seek counsel and talk to regularly. I grew up in Temple and moved to the Klein area, allowing me to graduate from Klein High School.

I am also a proud graduate of Sam Houston State University where I played football for the Bearkats and I was part of the 1991 championship team. I originally planned to become a strength coach at the collegiate level. As you can see that plan changed and I became a Texas peace officer. I continued with my desire to coach and teach as an adjunct professor for Sam Houston University for 10-plus years. I am blessed to be a father and a grandfather.

I retired honorably from DPS in 2019. Since my retirement, I worked for various police agencies, which have helped mold me into who I am today. I look forward to meeting you and talking to each of you. I have an open-door policy at the police department and I’m available to meet and talk with you.

Vaya con Dios, my friends. Call us if you need us.
