It is almost Valentine's Day. The SJC Senior Center will host a Dinner/Dance on Feb. 14 to celebrate the occasion. You can buy your ticket at the Senior Center or call (936) 653-4175.
Shepherd Library held the Annual Tea Party last week. Wearing a hat was requested but not required and the delicious sandwiches, cookies and fruit went perfectly with the choices of teas. Deborah made dandelion tea which was very refreshing. Alexis Wheeler and her son came, and she had created a wonderful hat to go with her outfit, worthy of a photograph.
Coldspring Library will have its Princess Tea Party later this month on Feb. 28, call (936) 653-3104 to reserve your ticket and place or call. This a delightful event held in the Coldspring Methodist Fellowship Hall. Tickets are $25 before the event, $30 at the door.
Coldspring Garden Club met last Thursday and worked on propagating plants and getting ready for the fund raiser plant sale coming shortly. The Garden Club is a friendly and helpful organization for all gardeners, whatever kind of gardening you like. Guest speakers inform the group on many topics including how to control pests, how to attract bluebirds and Hummingbirds and what plant food is best. Go to the web site or Facebook page to see more information.
Also last Thursday the SJC Historical Commission met in the Courthouse Basement Hall of Heroes. This is a museum dedicated to veterans of many wars fought by those who lived and/or are related to residents of our county. The Commission is working on sorting, collating and eventually scanning all the historical paperwork found in the Jailhouse Museum which will eventually be available to everyone on a web site. It is a huge project.
The City of Shepherd held a ribbon cutting to open the new playground at the Community Center Park. Matthew Greer and the great team of City workers created the playground which is laid out over a deep cover of soft shavings material. Children will love this new addition to our city.
The new Democratic Chair for our county is Benita Malone. She has already started a new calendar of events; first one is Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. at Bullet House Grill in Point Blank. The Democratic County Convention is on March 21 at 10 a.m. at the Coldspring Community Center by the Courthouse. Election day is March 3.
The Republican Reagan/Trump event was big success. You saw photos of this event last week, but I include here some of the people who made the event happen. In any event the organizers and workers are often forgotten It's good to remember them too.
Members of the Coldspring Garden Club and Women's League remember with sadness the passing of our friend Eleanor Zoeller. Eleanor was a helper. Everyone who knew her admired her. Condolences to her family on their loss.
The next Shepherd Chamber of Commerce meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. at the Family Restaurant, 2700 S. Byrd Ave., in Shepherd. If you are interested in being part of the planned Shepherd Farmers Market starting in March, you are welcome to come, as is anyone else interested in our future events.
Contact the Shepherd Chamber of Commerce at (210) 995-7420 or the Coldspring Chamber at (936) 653-2184.
Yvonne Cones is president of the Shepherd Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Coldspring Chamber of Commerce.
