Coldspring VFD Fire Fest follows the week after with a day of fun, food and a wide variety of games, contests, raffles, silent auction and more. From 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. on Oct. 25 there will be vendors, live shows and free candy to entertain and an unusual contest for the creative people among us, a scarecrow contest. It is free to enter.

Give your scarecrow a name or theme.

Of course, a Fire Fest must include a Chili Cook-Off. Entries must be homemade. A full set of instructions is available to entrants. Entry fee is $25, and forms can be submitted any Tuesday night from 7-9 p.m. Categories are People's Choice, voted on by attendees, and Judges Choice, voted on by a three-member panel. •Do you like dogs? The SJC Animal Rescue need volunteers to help exercise the dogs. They also need help with cleaning and feeding them. Volunteers can choose their time to come and get to know other volunteers who share the same interests. The Center is at 5500 FM 2025, call (281) 541-8537. There is an excellent website too.

•The Women's League had a splendid lunch, and I chose my words wisely here. Mary Gray served a wonderful meal finishing with banana pudding. The guest speaker was Suzanne York, who spoke about the resources and inspiration we need to live a happier and healthier life. Her talk was entitled “Winning the 4th Quarter.”

•Shepherd Chamber of Commerce will celebrate the Christmas event and Parade on Dec. 6. There is a change in the location which will be in the park next to Shepherd Library and City Hall. Santa will be in the Gazebo for photos with the family. Vendors will have a choice of on the grass or on the sidewalk in front of the Library.

The Parade will be as usual at 6 p.m. lining up along the road by the park. Call the Chamber or text for more information. This location is central to the town and vendors will not have to close up before the Parade. They can stay longer, and we will have music and singing throughout the day.

•The Tractor Supply building is moving along fast. Soon we will be able to shop there. The business is facing the frontage road on Highway 59 South.
