Trinity County has its patriotism on full display

What a glorious Fourth of July Celebration I had, and what fun I had watching other people celebrate too. It is amazing how Americans like to celebrate after the fact, i., e. fireworks on the Fifth of July. My subdivision shoots fireworks off on the fifth of July, has a golf cart parade, throws out candy, and plays music while its happening. This is the first year I am going to decorate our golf cart, and I will let you know if I win, place or show.

The Martin Senior Citizen Center Fourth of July Fundraiser was a huge success. We had two events going on at the same time and they were both awesome. First, the barbecue brisket plate, turkey legs, and jalapeno poppers sold out downtown by 4 p.m. and racked in over $2,000 for the Center. Second, the 42 Domino Tournament held inside the Center was another huge success from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and made $775 in entry fees.

We had 40 people attend and play dominos from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The players came from Kirbyville, Jasper, Splendora. Porter, Cleveland, Livingston, Huntsville, Willis, Spring, Lovelady, and Trinity. Door prizes, snacks, lunch and cash prizes were given to the first, second, and third place team winners. Three of the six place winners were from Trinity. We also gave gift baskets to the person that came the farthest distance, to the oldest player attending, the youngest player attending, the oldest veteran player attending, and the person whose birthday was close to July 4.

Thank you to the staff and volunteers who made this event possible. The luncheon consisted of sliced barbecue, potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans, fruit salad, rolls, drinks, and a beautiful Fourth of July cake made by Brookshire Brothers. Kelly Hartsfield and her daughter, Shawna chaired a perfect tournament with Tillie Poe, Sherly Brenneman, and Randy McCaffety as their helpers. Everyone had a good time and promised to come back for the next tournament.

A special thanks go to T.J. Allbright for cooking the barbecue brisket for this event. He and Melissa also supported an event on the Fifth of July for the River of Life Church children who will be attending their Church’s summer camp before school starts and graciously made time to cook for the Martin Senior Citizen Center event. Pray for their safety.

• It is with great sorrow that I have to mention the tragedy that occurred in Central Texas on the Fourth of July, but people want to help and donate. So, I will report any locations and organizations that announce their time and places to gather for people to drop off supplies.

Trinity VFW Post 6899 at 400 Caroline St. in Trinity is gathering money and supplies to send to the flood victims. They are asking for non-perishable goods, and money cards. Please call Marilyn Barnes if you would like to donate or can help on (281) 782-8509. I will report more locations as announced.

•People are gearing up for Fall activities and I have many readers asking about September and October events, but I want to announce a few more August events before I leave the summer events. There is a circus coming to town, a concert coming to town, and Labor Day events planned before September arrive, so watch for these dates to be announced so you can attend all the Trinity community events.

• The Trinity Community Fair Association is starting to buzz about the Fair and Livestock Show that is held in September, with the formal dates being Sept. 19 and 20, but the showing and judging of animals starts two days before those two dates.
