Trinity loses tough game to Onalaska in season opener

TRINITY — The Tigers drop their district opener to Onalaska at home on Friday, but they didn’t go down without a fight.

Trinity lost to the Wildcats 94-65.

Ayden Debose had a big game with 32 points on the night, while Terian Maxie added 17 points and Darryn Bass added 10, combining for 59 points between the three.

On Jan. 7, Trinity downed Jasper 73-55.

Head Coach Colton Jackson said that with several Tigers in early foul trouble, Terian Maxie led the charge, earning a career high 28 points on the night. Darryn Bass chipped in 16 points.

Chanston Holland was a defensive presence in the paint with several blocks down low, and even with being in foul trouble for a big part of the game, Ayden Debose managed to add 11 points and several big-time assists, Jackson said.

Centerville

The Bulldogs won both district games last week to move to 5-0 in district and take sole possession of first place in District 27-1A through the first five games. The team also maintains its 6th place state ranking.

On Jan. 7, Centerville took the short trip to Apple Springs to face the Eagles. Centerville pulled off a 65-52 win over Apple Springs on the road.

For Centerville, Jake Slaten led the way with 32 points, 18 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Kolt Larsen poured in 24 points, 10 assists, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals. Iain Kendrick had 8 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Hardy Brown chipped in 5 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block.

For Apple Springs, Zeth Dugat did yeoman’s work with a 33-point game, while Noah Thompson added 7 rebounds.

Centerville JV defeated Apple Springs JV 34-31 behind 9 points each from Eli Emmons and Brice Selman, 8 points from Chris Fry, 6 points from Brandon McWhorter and 2 points from Kie Barton. Centerville JV moves to 5-3 on the year.

Coach Geoff Hollis said Friday's highly anticipated game with Kennard was moved to Central due to capacity seating concerns, which turned out to be valid as a huge crowd filled Central's gym to watch the Top 20 matchup.

In an exciting back-and-forth game, Centerville came up with some clutch plays down the stretch to earn a 68-64 victory over the No. 17 Tigers.

Hollis said Jake Slaten led the way with 18 points, 17 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals. Another huge game from Kolt Larsen with 17 points, 12 assists, 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Iain Kendrick, who hit one of the biggest clutch treys of the year, finished with 17 points, 1, rebound and 1 assist. Hardy Brown contributed 8 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 1 block. Wyatt Clede chipped in 6 points, 4 rebounds and 1 block.

Groveton

The Indians lost to Lovelady 60-17 on Jan. 7.

Top scorers were George Snyder and Josiah Allen with 6 points apiece.

On Friday, the Indians were overpowered by Latexo 81-30.

Top scorers were Ruger McLain and Snyder, both with 9 points.

Apple Springs

The Eagles put one in the W column after a forfeit by Laneville on Friday.

Trinity

The Lady Tigers posted a district win for the first time in 4 years with a 63-28 victory over Onalaska on Friday.

The team moves to 19-9 overall and 1-2 in district.

Mariah Tyson had 22 points and 15 rebounds, while Ariah English added 11 points and 8 rebounds.

On Jan. 7, Trinity was edged out by Crockett 40-37.

Top scorer was Tyson with 12 points and 21 rebounds.

Groveton

The Lady Indians lost 60-26 to Lovelady on Jan. 7 at Lovelady. We. Leading scorers were Lauren Moore with 10 points, Laney Peterson with 7, and Kayleigh Albus.

Against Latexo on Friday, Groveton lost by a score of 47-40. Leading scorers were Kayleigh Albus with 14, Darbi Parker with 10 and Laney Peterson with 6.

Centerville

The Lady Bulldogs girls defeated Apple Springs 31-18 on Jan. 7 behind 19 points from Taylor Barton, and 4 points each from Peyton Noack, Jordyn Jones and Kyleigh Bogs.

Centerville lost to Kennard 37-18 on Friday. Taylor Barton led the way with 6 points along with 4 points each from Kyleigh Bogs and Jamie Whittlesey. Jordyn Jones had 3 points and Peyton Noack chipped in 1 point.

The Lady Dawgs are currently 2-5 in district play.

Apple Springs

The Lady Eagles downed Laneville 45-42 on Friday.
