Trinity PD still without a chief

TRINITY — After two meetings worth of discussion, the Trinity City Council has whittled down the applicants for the vacant police chief position to two, but those applicants may not be right for the job.

Mayor Billy Goodin said that at a special meeting on Dec. 9 and the regular meeting on Thursday, council members reviewed applications, but ultimately made no decisions.

He said the council members were volleying back and forth heavily on two finalists but may have to seek more applicants; one candidate may have another job offer and may not take the job, and the second applicant’s salary requirements may not fit the city budget.

At this time, Sgt. Ray Hester is ramrodding the City Police Department.

Goodin also said that there are three open patrol officers positions which have not been fill since the new chief would need to fill his own staff.

In other business, the council:

  • set Jan. 15-Feb. 14 as the filing period for the 2025 city election;
  • gave the annual approval for the Drought Contingency Ordinance;
  • approved the new signature cards for the upcoming fiscal year and authorized certain city employees to pick up deposit bags; and
  • approved an Economic Development Board’s recommendation to install awnings on downtown businesses, as well as a recommendation to build news restrooms at Black Veterans Memorial Baseball Park.
