Trinity Tigers secure district win over Coldspring in defensive battle

COLDSPRING — In a hard-fought district matchup, the Trinity Tigers edged out the Coldspring Trojans 42-37, sealing the victory in the final moments of the game.

The contest was defined by defensive intensity, as both teams grappled with full-court pressure and struggled to find consistent scoring opportunities.

The game started evenly, with both teams putting up 10 points in the first quarter. However, Coldspring found its rhythm in the second quarter, scoring 14 points with precise shooting while Trinity managed only 9. By halftime, the Trojans held a 24-19 lead, setting themselves up as the team to beat.

After regrouping at halftime, the Trinity Tigers came out determined to control the paint. Their defensive adjustments stifled Coldspring’s offensive efforts, limiting the Trojans to just 7 points in the third quarter. Trinity responded with 9 points of their own, cutting Coldspring’s lead to a narrow 31-28 heading into the final quarter.

In the final frame, the Tigers gained momentum under the basket, exerting dominance in the paint and controlling the tempo of the game. With only seconds remaining, Trinity managed to take the lead, forcing Coldspring to foul in an attempt to regain possession. However, the Tigers capitalized on their free throws, extending their lead and sealing the district victory with a final score of 42-37.

Coldspring’s leading scorer was Josh Brimsey with 11 points, followed by Jayden Kelly with 7. Bryan Douglas and Barton each contributed 5 points, while Dacoryin Barnes, Noah Bradford, and T.J. Johnson all added 2 points apiece.

On Friday, The Coldspring Trojans faced off against the Crockett Bulldogs but fell short with a score of 56-45.

Crockett, currently holding the number one spot in the district alongside Onalaska, showcased their strength with a dominant third-quarter performance, outscoring Coldspring 21-10.

At halftime, Coldspring trailed by just 8 points, 28-20; however, the Bulldogs came out strong in the third quarter, scoring 13 of his team-high points in that frame. His efforts helped Crockett pull away, making a Coldspring comeback difficult.

For the Trojans, Noah Bradford led the scoring with 17 points, followed by Jayden Kelly with 8 points. Dacoryin Barnes contributed 7 points, and Barton added 6 points to the tally. One of the key challenges for Coldspring was fouls as they committed 20 personal fouls compared to Crockett’s 10.

The Pirates lost two games on the week, falling to Livingston 64-53 on Feb. 4 and to Hardin-Jefferson 70-42.

Against Livingston, the top scorers were Brayden White with 15 points and 18 rebounds, Bryson Goodman with 15 points and Nicholas Singletary with 11.

The Coldspring Lady Trojans battled their way to a hard-fought 42-37 victory over Trinity in an intense game marked by strong defensive play and shifting momentum.

The teams were locked in a 23-23 tie at halftime, setting the stage for a nail-biting second half.

Kelsey Ivory contributed with a 2-point basket, while Shantel Goffney added six points, including three at the free-throw line. Ella Phillips led the Lady Trojans with 15 points but struggled at the free-throw line, going 1-for-8. Camiyah Hines scored two points and made 2-of-4 from the line. Akiah Harwig tallied seven points with three 2-point shots and one successful free throw out of four attempts. Alayla Goffney put up five points, including two 2-point baskets and one free throw in four attempts.

One of the key challenges for Coldspring was their performance at the free-throw line, where they made only 8 of 32 attempts. The game was defined by aggressive defensive play, with both teams executing strong full-court presses that kept scoring in check. The lead seesawed throughout the game, but in the final minutes, Coldspring managed to shift the momentum in their favor, securing the win.

“We had a very slow start tonight. I guess it was because of the stress of it being Senior Night in Coldspring,” said Ella Phillips, the Lady Trojans’ center. “Deep into the fourth quarter, we started to regain our confidence and took control of the game. It was close, but it was a win.”

Coach Monique Whittaker echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Obviously, we had trouble keeping focus and trying to control the speed and momentum of the game, but it was a win, and I am glad of that.”

The victory secured the Lady Trojans the second seed in district play, setting up a first-round playoff matchup against the third seed from the opposing district.
