Shepherd residents had a shock last week when, on turning on the faucets, nothing came out! Phone calls to the City revealed that the problem was being worked on. Thankfully, water started to flow once again a few hours later.
At the Council meeting last week, we were told that the problem was caused by a lightning strike which caused a power surge in the equipment and knocked it out. That is not quite the technical term for the damage, but I think anything struck by lightning is knocked out.
Thank you to the city team who fixed the problem quickly.
• It was Fish Friday at the SJC Senior Center sponsored by People’s State Bank. As always it was delicious. Administrator Charline Smith told the very full room that meals would have to cost a dollar more from Aug. 1 since they had been told they would receive $2,500 less each month due to cuts.
The Center caters to many people, and the Center was also informed they could not continue to provide meals to go. The Center is working on how to move forward in the future.
Later that day, the Senior Center was the location for the Coldspring VFD’s fundraiser. It was Bingo Night with great food and snacks and prizes. The latter comprised excellent donations including two beautiful quilts.
The evening was very well-organized and everyone enjoyed the fun. Hopefully we can expect a repeat of this fun event sometime in the future.
• The Tractor Supply building site in Shepherd is coming along very well. Located on Frontage Road on SH 59 at Lilley Road, it will be a welcome addition to our community.
• On July 26, Coldspring will celebrate Christmas in July round the Courthouse and in the shops and stores as well as vendors setting up round the building. This will be a good time to buy gifts and save the time and expense in December.
There will be many businesses selling their products as well as some non-profit organizations giving away handouts.

• I hope you have avoided being scammed either online or by phone? If you would like to know more about how to protect yourself from these scams you can go to Coldspring Library on Aug. 5 at 4 p.m. They will give a talk on what to look for and how to stay smart and stay secure. Call (936) 653-3104.
I have a friend who lost $3,000 in a phone scam supposedly from the FBI. She is a sweet but vulnerable person who was conned by a convincing crook. This talk is a good idea to help us keep up with the latest con artists.
• Aug. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Shepherd Library Park, there will be a free concert with an Elvis impersonator entertaining everyone. Watch for more details next week on this event.
