San Jacinto County Women’s League members of the Board and committees met at the Senior Center in Coldspring last week. The group finalized the details for the Yearbook, which is the admirable work of Linda Deeter.
Members’ names and details, calendar of the upcoming year and much more are featured in the Yearbook. Members will be able to pick up their copy at the first meeting of the new season on Sept. 11 at the Community Center in Coldspring. We have new faces in the group and of course members who carry on with the work behind the scenes who have done so for years.
• Our county’s Historical Commission is busy working on a large project, archiving the many photos and articles dating back many years which, when completed, will be available to the public online. There are thousands of items to work through. Dale Everitt and Charles Ballard have set up the planning of how this will be done.
Equipment is of course needed to scan and work on the items. Many are very old and need conservation work. The Commission members will be helping get this work done. If you do not know that the Basement of the Courthouse is also a museum, you will be able to see for yourself with a visit there. Memories are shown in the pictures, artifacts, medals and costumes of those who fought in the wars of the last century. Those who fought for our country are remembered as well as some items from those who belonged to the enemy and were brought home by survivors.
• On Aug. 30 at the Jail Museum in Old Town Coldspring, there will be a presentation of a historic sword. Details will be in next week’s column.
