WOODVILLE – Kathy Taylor, the volunteer for the Woodville Animal Shelter’s Community Cat Program, spoke before city council last Tuesday evening. Kathy brought several four-legged visitors to the presentation, to the delight of all in attendance. All of the kittens were spoken for; five were going to Austin for adoption, and the sixth little cutie was claimed by Alderwoman Kelly Dillard.
Taylor began her remarks by explaining “our mission is to improve the life of cats in Woodville. The best way to improve the life of cats and people that care about them, and everyone in the community is with a program that protects their health. Tonight, I want to introduce you to an effective non-lethal program known as TNR, that will accomplish three these things. TNR involves strategies; the first is to trap, neuter, re-home friendly, adoptable cats. The second is trap, neuter, reunite outdoor cats with their owners and offer affordable spay/neuter services. The third option is trap, neuter, return, which returns unsocialized cats not suitable for adoption to the location where they were trapped after they have been sterilized, vaccinated, treated for parasites, and ear-tipped for identification’.
She elaborated, “TNR is being used by hundreds of cities across the nation, including Beaumont, Texas, and we have used TNR for decades in Woodville to control the cat population. TNR protects the public health by increasing the percentage of healthy, vaccinated cats in our community. TNR eliminates mating behaviors, the fighting, spraying, vocalizing, roaming, and endless litters of kittens, thereby reducing nuisance complaints. Please consider helping us to establish a humane, sustainable program to manage cat populations with an ordinance declaring TNR to be the preferred outcome for outdoor cats in Woodville”.
Bythewood read three proclamations during the meeting. The first was in honor of Red Ribbon Week, October 28-November 1, the second was in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness the entire month of October, and the third was in remembrance of long-time resident, former mayor and businessman, Russ Nalley.
Bythewood said “On behalf of the city of Woodville, I wish to record our deep sorrow over the passing of Russell O. Nalley, on October 3, 2024”. She went on to remark that” he was a beloved husband, father, friend and community leader, a long-term resident of Woodville, member of the Methodist church, former president of the Woodville Lion’s Club…accomplished and well-respected businessman who owned and operated Russ Nalley State Farm Insurance from 1986-2015. He served on the Woodville City Council, and was mayor from 2015-2018. His life was dedicated to the best interests of the community, and his family. The city of Woodville along with Russ’s family are blessed to have known him. On behalf of the entire city council in recognition of Russell O. Nalley’s many contributions to our city and its citizens, we hereby express our deep appreciation for his dedication to the progress of the community and extend our sincere sympathy to his family upon his passing.”
