AUSTIN  – An exemplary group of individuals from Texas were selected to receive the Honorary American FFA Degree at the 97th National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis, IN, which was held in late October.

Longtime Warren ISD educator Rex Currie was among the recipients and was awarded a plaque and medallion.

Currie, who has served as the adviser for Warren ISD’s FFA chapter since 1974 and is in his 50th year of teaching at the district, has also served on the Tyler County Fair board since 1976, when it was first established.

According to Ashley Dunkerley with the Texas FFA Association, the award is given to those who have shown exceptional dedication to advancing agricultural education and FFA through outstanding personal commitment at the state and National Level. The National FFA Organization works to enhance the lives of youth through agricultural education. Without the efforts of highly dedicated individuals, thousands of young people would not be able to achieve the success that, in turn, contributes directly to the overall well-being of the nation.

“The Honorary American FFA Degree is an opportunity to recognize those who have gone beyond valuable daily contributions to make an extraordinary long-term difference in the lives of students, inspiring confidence in a new generation of agriculturists. Members of the National FFA Organization’s board of directors approved the nomination,” Dunkerley said.

Jacob Spivey, a former student of Currie’s who is now a colleague, wrote that his former teacher has influenced and impacted thousands of lives during his career.

“The impact he has made is incalculable, his work has changed thousands of lives and his example has inspired many,” Spivey wrote in remarks to wrap-up the most recent Tyler County Fair, at which Currie was honored.
