Disaster declaration issued on heels of flooding

TYLER COUNTY – Sunday night brought with it four to seven inches of rain, according to the Tyler County Emergency Management Office. Those storms caused several roads in the south end of the county to flood, and Warren ISD to cancel school on Monday.

County Judge Milton Powers issued a declaration of disaster on Monday morning, citing widespread and/or severe damage from the severe weather conditions created by the torrential rainfalls.

The declaration allows for local authorities to take protective measures under the Texas Government Code, section 418.108, and activates the county’s Emergency Management Plan.

It remains in effect for seven days from the date declared, unless the Tyler County Commissioners Court extends it.

According to figures from the National Weather Service (NWS), most of that rain fell within one hour, which caused the standing water on the roads, including FM 1013; FM 1943 east and west; County Road 4755 and FM 1013 at CR 1520. FM 1013, along with 1943 east and west have been reopened.

The torrential downpours that befell the Deep East Texas region on Sunday night was part of a system of severe weather that tore across both Texas and Oklahoma through the weekend. At least two people, including a child, were reportedly killed in flooding in neighboring Oklahoma.
