The Yellowjacket basketball team sealed their second-place district finish on Feb. 17 in a 60-49 win over Spurger on Senior Night.
The Jackets started the game strong, outscoring the Pirates 16-5 in the first quarter. The Jackets outscored the Pirates in quarter two and then fell by one point in quarters three and four, but the early lead sealed the victory. Kasen Citrano scored 21, Braysen Neal had 14, Jaxon Gay 13, and Turner Johnson had 12.
The Jackets met up with Centerville for the Bi-District playoff match on Monday, Feb. 23 at Hudson High School. Again, the Jackets started the game strong with 8 points from Kasen Citrano and three pointers from Turner Johnson and Braysen Neal outscoring the Bulldogs by one point in the first quarter. The Jackets were still ahead at half 26-22. The second half of the game was an intense battle back and forth. The Jackets were ahead at the end of the third 41-38. In the fourth quarter the Jackets fell short and ultimately lost 53-55. Kasen Citrano scored 30 despite strong efforts to shut him out, Turner Johnson scored 11, Braysen Neal 10, and Jaxon Gay scored two.
The Lady Jacket softball team participated in the Big Sandy tournament on Feb. 19-21. The Lady Jackets picked up a 6-5 win against Kountze and tied 6-6 with Onalaska.
This week the Lady Jackets will participate in the Blues Brothers tournament in Nacogdoches. On Thursday, Feb. 26 the Lady Jackets play Joaquin at 10 a.m. and Alto at 11:30 a.m. On Friday, Feb. 27 the Lady Jackets face Cushing at 10 a.m. and Shelbyville at 4 p.m. They will finish the tournament on Saturday, Feb. 28 with games at 10 a.m. versus Grapeland and 11:30 a.m. against Timpson.
The Yellowjacket JV baseball team traveled to Onalaska on Feb. 20 and 21. The Jackets faced teams from Cleveland, Coldspring, and Anderson coming up short in all three but making strides to improve with each game. This week the varsity squad will travel to Latexo for a three-day tournament Feb. 26-28 with a schedule to be determined. The JV squad gets another chance to improve in the Liberty tournament. On Friday, Feb. 27 the JV team will play Tarkington at 6 p.m. On Saturday they will play Splendora at noon and Liberty at 2pm.
Track season also starts this week. The Jackets will participate in the Groveton meet on Thursday, Feb. 26 with field events starting at 3 p.m.
